What Is Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Wisdom tooth extraction is the removal of one or more of the four back teeth that usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25. It is done when a wisdom tooth is painful, infected, decayed, or stuck under the gum or bone. It is a common procedure done under local anaesthesia.
Why Wisdom Teeth Cause Trouble
Many jaws do not have enough room for wisdom teeth. The tooth may grow at an angle, only partly come out, or stay trapped under the gum. This is called impaction. Trapped food and germs can cause pain, swelling and infection.
Signs You May Need Removal
- Pain or swelling at the back of the jaw
- Red, swollen gums behind the last tooth
- A bad taste or bad breath
- Difficulty opening your mouth fully
- Repeated gum infection around the tooth, called pericoronitis
- Decay in the wisdom tooth or the tooth in front of it
- Damage to the neighbouring tooth
Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed. If a tooth has come in fully, is healthy and can be cleaned, it can stay.
How the Dentist Decides
The dentist examines your mouth and takes an X-ray, usually an OPG, which shows all teeth and the jaw. This shows the angle of the tooth and its closeness to nerves.
How Wisdom Tooth Removal Is Done
- Numbing. Local anaesthesia is given so you do not feel pain. You will feel pressure but not pain.
- Removal. For a tooth that is fully out, it is loosened and lifted out. For an impacted tooth, a small cut is made in the gum, some bone may be removed, and the tooth may be taken out in pieces.
- Cleaning and stitches. The area is cleaned. Stitches are placed if needed.
- Gauze. You bite on gauze to control bleeding.
A simple removal takes about 15 to 30 minutes. An impacted tooth can take 30 to 60 minutes.
Recovery After Wisdom Tooth Removal
| Time | What to expect |
|---|
| First few hours | Numbness, slight bleeding. Bite on gauze as advised |
| Day 1 to 3 | Swelling and soreness, at their worst around day 2 to 3 |
| Day 3 to 7 | Swelling and pain reduce. Stitches removed at about day 5 to 7 |
| 1 to 2 weeks | Most people feel normal. The gum heals fully over a few weeks |
Most people go back to work or school in 1 to 3 days.
Aftercare Tips

When to Call the Dentist
Call the clinic if you have:

- Severe pain that starts or gets worse around day 3 to 5. This can be a dry socket, where the blood clot is lost.
- Fever or increasing swelling
- Pus or a bad taste that gets worse
- Numbness that lasts beyond the day of the procedure
